Our Conductor - Stephen Rumsey

Stephen Rumsey has been Musical Director of Ipswich Choral Society for the past 20 years, combining this, and other conducting work with a teaching and coaching practice both freelance and at Brentwood School in Essex.

In the late 1960s Steve was appointed an orchestral manager with the London Symphony Orchestra, working with many of the legendary names in Twentieth Century music including Bernstein, Stokowski, Coplane, Abbado Menhuin and Boulez. He studied at Leeds University under Alexander Goehr, and later with musicians such as Peter Maxwell Davies, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, John Carewe and Hans Keller, and in Siena with Franco Ferrara.

Stephen Rumsey has directed many choirs, orchestras and opera companies, including instrumental and operatic groups at Morley College in London, the Rush-Hour Proms for the Great Eastern Railway Company, the royal opening of Liverpool St station for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and projects by Syrinx Music.

Steve also sits on the Council of the Society for the Promotion of New Music, a body set up by Francis Chagrin 60 years ago, whose aims are the professional development of composers and the encouragement of expression through musical composition in the young.
